Starting on piano at age 6, Abby Savell found her musical calling in percussion in high school. She was drawn to the
infinite timbre and textural possibilities in the percussion section and the variety of sounds that could be achieved with
Fast-forward a decade, and she had earned a bachelors in music performance from Chapman
University and a minor in Organizational Leadership and then an MFA in multi-focus percussion from CalArts. Abby had
also found her musical and life counterpart in Dan Savell, a fellow percussionist who specialized in steel drums. Abby
continued to perform as a professional musician with various orchestras and other ensembles, on some recordings, and
as both a steel drum soloist and with their steel drum and Caribbean band, Nesta. Realizing that they had a fair amount
of instruments together, and not being terribly fond of constantly driving all over Southern California for short gigs, in
2005, Abby and Dan decided to start a percussion rental company, L.A. Percussion Rentals, LLC, to serve the
professional musician community.
Rather quickly, it became apparent that some unmet demand existed for their services and the company (and scope
of instruments) snowballed. Abby took on the roles of marketing, social media, research, and some instrument restoration. She and Dan have
developed L.A. Percussion Rentals, LLC into a company which has a solid reputation and is considered a staple in the music industry. In addition to
being an active cornerstone of the rental company, Abby continues to perform as a professional musician (but with less driving), while raising two
boys, ages 9 and 5, and a baby girl, almost 6 months.
