Free Online Materials Science Course Offered by Stanford
University's Class2Go
One of Stanford University's
Class2Go
offerings this year is a free course entitled "Solar
Cells, Fuel Cells and Batteries," taught by
Bruce Clemens, professor in the Materials Science and
Engineering department, and President of the Materials
Research Society. The course will focus on the operating
principles and applications of emerging technological
solutions to the energy demands of the world. Beginning
with a discussion of the scale of global energy usage
and requirements for possible solutions, the course will
move on to the basic physics and chemistry of solar
cells, fuel cells, and batteries. The se topics will be
discussed in quantitative detail. The course will also
explore performance issues, including economics, from
the ideal device to the installed system. Finally, it
will end with the promise of materials research for
providing next generation solutions.
The class prerequisites include basic high
school/freshman physics, chemistry, math and calculus.
The course starts October 8th, so there is still time to
sign up. Don't
miss this fantastic opportunity for life-long learning
from one of the world's best universities!
