Assessment Desks

Assessment is a critical component of your academic success. It provides the means to measure your current abilities in English or ESL, reading, and math so that you select classes appropriate for your skill level.
Here are a couple of tips to help you perform better on your assessment:
Before the Test
  • In order to take the tests, you must have an application on file with the Admissions Office.
  • It may have been some time since you were asked to perform English and math work, so it's a good idea to re-fresh your skills by taking some practice tests. There is also a great phone app and web pages on our website to help identify areas you need to brush up on.
  • From January through summer, math mentors will hold math brush up workshops in The Learning Center.  Drop in!  For dates and times, go to www.canyons.edu/Offices/Assessment/Pages/Math-Workshops.aspx
  • Get plenty of rest the night before you test.
  • Clear your schedule so that you aren't stressed about having to finish the exam in a hurry because there's someplace else you need to be.
Day of the Test
  • Bring a picture ID and have your College of the Canyons ID number available.
  • Each test usually takes approximately 45 minutes to complete, so you should be prepared to spend at least 90 minutes at the center.  There is no time limit.
  • Give yourself ample time to find parking.
  • Pay for parking at the parking kiosks located in Lot 15 and park in a student parking space.  As a reminder, you may be here for two hours or more. Purchasing a one-day parking pass will allow you to assess without fear of being ticketed.
  • Calculators are not permitted.  You will be provided with scratch paper and a pencil.
  • Wear something comfortable and bring something warm to wear, in case you get cold.
  • Have something to eat before you test. You'll spend at least 2 hours testing and you don't want to be distracted by hunger pangs.
  • Only testing students are allowed in the Assessment Center.  All others must wait outside the test area.
  • Your results will be available immediately and an Assessment Center staff member will go over your math, English or ESL placement with you.
