With more than 31 years of prep and collegiate experience, Greg Herrick begins his20th season as head coach at College of the Canyons. He is considered one of the most innovative and respected coaches in the United States and is recognized by many as one of the leading authorities on fast-break basketball.
In his 30 years as a head coach, Herrick has led his teams to 20 conference or league championships, including back-to-back Los Angeles City Section Boys Basketball championships at Reseda-Cleveland High School, 13 Western State Conference titles at College of the Canyons and five appearances in the Women's California State Championship Tournament. In 1997, the Cougars were state finalists, posting a school record 33 wins (33-5) and setting the all-time California Community College single-season scoring record when the team averaged 95.7 points per game.
Herrick has been named conference or league Coach of the Year 15 times and has led his teams to playoff appearances in 28 of 30 seasons. In 19 seasons at College of the Canyons, Herrick has transformed the women's basketball program into one of the nation's very best. The Cougars are an outstanding 199-21 (.905) in conference play over the past 18 seasons and have won 13 conference titles. Herrick has been named Western State Conference Coach of the Year eight times and was honored by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as a finalist for its CONVERSE National Junior College Coach of the Year in both 1995 and 1997.
Herrick is a 1971 graduate of Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School where he was selected Athlete of the Year as a senior and is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. In the spring of 2010, he was also inducted into the Reseda-Cleveland High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Herrick received his bachelor's degree in history from Loyola Marymount University in 1975 and a master's degree in educational administration from California State University, Northridge, in 1989. |
