Why choose College of the Canyons to learn how to weld?
College of the Canyons has been training and qualifying welders for more than 30 years. Our highly qualified faculty members are seasoned welding professionals who are Certified Welding Inspectors with the American Welding Society. Our facility is equipped with the most technologically advanced welding equipment, providing an excellent learning environment. Students have several options to earn certifications and/or degrees. Welding courses are available day and night, and programs can often be completed in one year.

So, why choose welding for a career?
A Hobart Institute of Welding survey of more than 200 manufacturers and fabricators revealed that their No. 1 concern is the lack of trained welding operators nationwide. Welders are in high demand and can often earn higher wages with better job security in comparison to other building trades. Other welding-related fields that welders often consider later in their careers are weld inspection, sales, supervision and business owner.

What is involved with being a welder?
Welders commonly fuse metal with welding processes that provide extreme heat. Because of its strength, welding is used to construct and repair parts of ships, automobiles, spacecraft and thousands of other manufactured products. The welding environment can range from working on high-rise buildings to cutting metal 300 feet underwater (or below the surface of the sea).

What is the outlook for welders?
The U.S. is experiencing a shortage of qualified welders to serve current and future needs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “…job prospects should be excellent as employers report difficulty finding enough qualified people. In addition, many openings are expected to arise as a large number of workers retire over the next decade.”

"Being a combat veteran myself, one of the real big questions is, "What am I going to do after the military"? When they had the welding program, VA assisted, it opened up a whole new world. So I definitely highly recommend somebody - a returning vet- you're not limited, you have options. "

"It originally started when I fell in love with metal. I wanted to incorporate that into my own art work. I
took quite a bit of TIG, oxy-acetylene and MIG
welding, and I took a fabrication class that turned
out to be a true blessing! "
