Threat Assessment at COC
College of
the Canyons' Valencia Campus
is located in
Santa Clarita (Valencia) on 153.4 acres adjacent to Interstate Highway
5. It is in a highly populated and well traveled area. The on-campus
student enrollment is approximately 12,000 students per semester with
approximately 170 full-time faculty and 500 adjunct instructors. In
addition, there are approximately 215 classified employees and 50
administrators. During peak periods there may be as many as 6,000
people on campus at any given time.
FIRE:
Urban and grassland fire occurrences have significant potential to
impact the Canyon Country Campus College. Most fire emergencies are
handled through normal response without activation of this Emergency
Operations Plan (EOP).
TRANSPORTATION:
Transportation accidents may include major automobile accidents,
airplane crashes or train derailments and transportation-related
hazardous materials releases, pipeline ruptures and illegal dumping.
UTILITY FAILURE:
Both sites may be subject to the shortage or loss of electrical power
for periods in excess of 24 hours.
CIVIL
DISTURBANCE/TERRORISM:
This hazard may include riots, protests, demonstrations, strikes as well
as acts of terrorism or rampancy.
EARTHQUAKE: An earthquake
could impact either segments of or the total population at both campus
locations.
FLOODING: The western and
northern portions of the City of Santa Clarita are subject to dam
failure from Castaic Lake. The entire City may be subject to flooding,
due to flash flooding, urban flooding (storm drain
failure/infrastructure breakdown), river channel overflow, downstream
flooding, etc. The City has not historically been vulnerable to storm
surge inundation associated with hurricanes or tropical storms.
