Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)

Fire

It is important to know the location of fire extinguishers, fire exits and alarm systems in your area and know how to use them before a fire occurs (see Alarms and Evacuation Plan Sections).  Training and information are available through Campus Safety.

If a minor fire appears controllable, IMMEDIATELY contact the Fire Department by dialing 9-1-1 and Campus Safety at campus extension 3229.  Then promptly direct the charge of the fire extinguisher toward the base of the flame.

If an emergency exists, activate the building alarm (see Alarms Section) and then evacuate the building.

For large or uncontrollable fires, IMMEDIATELY notify the Fire Department by dialing
9-1-1 and Campus Safety at campus extension 3229.  Then evacuate all rooms, closing all doors to confine the fire and reduce oxygen to the fire.  DO NOT LOCK DOORS.

When the building evacuation alarm sounds, an emergency exists.  Walk to the nearest marked exit and ask others to do the same.

Assist physically challenged persons to exit the building.  Do not use elevators in case of fire.  Smoke is the greatest danger during a fire, so stay low and near the floor where the air will be less toxic.

Once outside, proceed to your designated evacuation assembly area (refer to Campus Maps) and remain until an “all clear” signal is given.  It is important to keep streets, fire lanes, hydrants and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and first-responder personnel.

If requested, assist emergency crews; otherwise, stay clear.

Do not return to an evacuated building until it has been established safe by a College official.

If you become trapped in a building during a fire and a window is available, place an article of clothing outside the window as a marker for rescue crews.  If there is no window in the room, stay near the floor where the air will be less toxic.  Shout at regular intervals.  Stay calm, do not panic.
