Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)

Active Shooter

Active Shooter procedure

If you hear gunfire:

  • The first course of action is to take cover. Your best chance to avoid injury is to remove yourself from sight. This can be done in several ways

  • If confronted while seated in an office or classroom, immediately fall to the floor.

  • When walking down a hallway, look for an open room in which to hide.

  • Remember to close, lock and/or barricade doorways; turn off lights and hide.

  • If a room has shades or curtains, close them.

  • When outdoors, get behind a tree, wall, or fence; lie down and wait for rescue.

  • If caught in an open parking lot, hide behind the front wheel/engine area of the nearest vehicle.

Use a telephone or cell phone to contact local authorities at 9-1-1, or contact the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station directly by calling (661) 255-1121.

Be prepared to give these most important pieces of information:

  • Your name.

  • Location such as campus, building name, floor and room number where you are located.

  • Describe the shooter, if possible; clothing description will help the police locate the shooter.

  • Where is the shooter now?  Where did you last see the shooter?  What is the shooter’s direction of travel?

  • Tell the dispatcher if you have any injuries or if anyone else needs medical attention.

If you or others are wounded:

  • Stay calm and apply pressure to wound to control bleeding.

  • Call out for help when you hear the police/rescue teams in your area.
