Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)

Flooding

During a Flood

  • If indoors, evacuate the building immediately.

  • If outdoors, move quickly away from buildings to higher ground.

  • While evacuating, move towards higher ground and away from the direction of the water flow.  Avoid utility poles and other structures and always avoid downed power utility lines because they may be energized.

  • Do not walk through moving water.  If you must walk through a flooded area, walk where the water is not moving.  Use an object (such as a stick) to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.

  • Do not drive through or into flooded areas.  If floodwaters rise around your vehicle, abandon the vehicle, if it is safe to do so, and move to higher ground.

After the Flood

  • Evaluate the situation and, if emergency help is necessary, call for help.

  • Avoid flood waters.  The water may be contaminated or electrically charged from underground or downed power lines

  • Avoid moving water.  Moving water as low as six inches deep can sweep you off your feet.

  • Keep streets and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and first-responder personnel.

  • Listen for instructions from College officials. If necessary you will be directed to go to an evacuation assembly area where you will receive further information about local conditions and exit routes from campus.

Be alert to hazards around you such as building damage, gas leaks, fires, broken or downed utility lines, spilled chemicals and other potentially harmful materials.

  • DO NOT use matches or open flames near dangerous fumes.
