Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)

Chemical or Hazardous Material Spill

CHEMICAL OR HAZARDOUS MATERIAL SPILL

Any spillage of a hazardous chemical or radioactive material should be reported immediately to Campus Safety at campus extension 3229 and the Fire Department by dialing 9-1-1.  When reporting, be specific about the nature and location of the material.  Campus Safety will contact the necessary specialized authorities and medical personnel.

The affected area should be evacuated at once and sealed off to prevent further contamination until the arrival of Campus Safety personnel.  If an emergency exists, activate the building alarm. When the building evacuation alarm sounds, an emergency exists.  Walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.

Anyone who may be contaminated must avoid contact with others as much as possible, remain in the vicinity and identify themselves to Campus Safety personnel.  Required first aid and cleanup by specialized authorities should be started immediately.

Assist physically challenged persons to exit the building.  Remember that elevators are reserved for disabled persons use during emergencies.  Do not use elevators in case of fire.  Remain calm, do not panic.

Once outside, proceed to your designated assembly area (refer to the Campus Evacuation Maps Section) and remain until an “all-clear” signal is given.  It is important to keep streets, fire lanes, hydrants and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and first-responder personnel.

If requested, assist emergency crews as necessary; otherwise, stay clear.

Do not return to an evacuated building until it has been established safe by a College official.

Maintenance:  Immediate shutdown of air handling systems is required.
