Junior High Summer Institute - Art

Instructors

Jerry Kochendoerfer - Anime Drawing

Jerry has been an artist his entire life and studied illustration at the Columbus College of Art & Design. Jerry has been teaching many forms of art since the age 17 with an emphasis on cartooning & animation and works as a freelance graphic designer as well as an aspiring filmmaker

Lorelle Miller - Abstract Art

Lorelle has over 20 years of experience in the field of visual arts. Ms. Miller holds a B.A. in Art from CSUN, and has done extensive post graduate training. She holds a certificate in Arts Education from the LA Arts Commission, and is a member of the Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee. Lorelle has been teaching youth art at College of the Canyons for eight years and currently teaching painting for the Emeritus College program.

Deborah Jenkins, Paper Mache

Deborah teaches 2-D Design and Landmarks of Art at College of the Canyons and Art Appreciation at American Intercontinental University. She has a BA in Fine Art (3D Design), and an MA in Art History with a specialization in the Art of the Pre-Columbian Americas.
Deborah is an active ceramic artist and is currently the Historian for the American Ceramics Society – Design Chapter. In the summer of 2007 her work was chosen for a juried show of “Emerging Artists” at the Xiem Gallery in Pasadena. In 2008 she was represented in the President’s Show 2008, and “Diversity in Clay” at the American Museum of Ceramic Art.

 

Course Description

Time Block A – Paper Mache

Week 4 and 5
Paper mache, is a construction method that consists of pieces of paper bonded together using a wet paste or glue. The sculptural object becomes solid when the paste dries. When dry the surface can be painted or lacquered.

Time Block B – Anime Drawing

Week 4 and 5
Anime drawing students will learn the styles and techniques of traditional Japanese Anime drawing as well as create their own mini manga comic book.

Time Block C – Abstract Art

Week 4: 2-D Art
Explore the basics of painting and drawing. Students will have the opportunity to work with acrylic and watercolor paints and learn the basics of color theory and gain insight into the world of paint. Students will spend time defining the use of  light and dark values in creating 3 dimensional looking drawings.

Week 5: 3-D Art
Discover the various forms of 3 dimensional sculpture through the use of reusable materials, sculpey, and carved foam. Students will use their imagination to create interesting 3 dimensional creatures.  Some materials include clay and carving things out of soft foam and assembling a project to bring imaginations to life.
