Junior High Summer Institute - Math and Science

Instructors

Time Block A: Instructor Samuel Bolanos

Samuel Balonas has been teaching computer networking classes at College of the Canyons for many years. This is Samuel’s second year teaching in the Science track for the Jr High Summer Institute.

Time Block C: Instructor Vincent Devlahovich, M.S.

Professor Vincent Devlahovich attended the University of Utah for his undergraduate education before attending California State University, Northridge for his secondary teaching credential and graduate work.  His graduate research focused on the origin and transport of volcanic clasts found in the Santa Monica Mountains from their source near Poway, California north of San Diego.  He received his M.S. from CSUN in Interdisciplinary Studies with emphasis in Geology, Geomorphology and Tropical Biology and has a long teaching career including CSUN Geological Sciences Department, science and math in Simi Valley Unified school district, Glendale Community College, Moorpark Community College and is currently a full time professor at College of the Canyons.  Vincent’s recreational passions are winter sports, hiking, mountain biking and camping, all of which he has done for over 25 years.

Time Block B: Instructor Dr. James Gilmore

James Gilmore has taught mathematics at public and private schools and community colleges for 25 years.  He received his BA in Mathematics from UC Berkeley and his MS in Mathematics from CSU Northridge.  He has taught all levels of mathematics from arithmetic through calculus and is a full-time member of the College of the Canyons mathematics faculty. He is also the advisor for the Canyons Math Club.

  • Prime Numbers: The amazing and mysterious primes
  • Fermat's Last Theorem: How a 350 year old puzzle was finally solved
  • What is Calculus all about?
  • Logical Parad

Time Block C – Geoscience

This week is a survey of Geoscience topics with emphasis on hands-on engaging laboratory experiences and a survey of local geology of the Santa Clarita area.
The lessons with use a multimedia approach to learning combined with a highly interactive classroom experience that is promised to be fun, fun, fun!
