Shane currently teaches a variety of biology classes at College of the Canyons, including Zoology and General Biology. Shane graduated Summa Cum Laude from UCLA with a B.S. in Biology, and then completed his doctorate in microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, also at UCLA. While Shane enjoys research and has been published in the science journal Molecular Microbiology, his true passion is teaching. Shane is also involved with Marine Science education of junior high students through the Catalina Island Marine Institute, where he has been chaperoning 8th grade students from Nobel Middle School in Northridge for over ten years now.
James Gilmore has taught mathematics at public and private schools and community colleges for 25 years. He received his BA in Mathematics from UC Berkeley and his MS in Mathematics from CSU Northridge. He has taught all levels of mathematics from arithmetic through calculus and is a full-time member of the College of the Canyons mathematics faculty. He is also the advisor for the Canyons Math Club.
Kathy Flynn has been teaching chemistry at College of the Canyons for ten years. She earned her Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from UC Davis. This is Dr. Flynn’s second year teaching in the Science track for the Jr High Summer Institute.
Time Block A –Biotechnology
Biotechnology Students will get a chance to work with their own DNA, do a DNA fingerprint, sample the microbial environment and use a microscope. From grape Kool-Aid to potato chips, biological molecules will be explored and lots of cool technological gadgets used.
Time Block B –Mathematics
Time Block C –Chemistry
The JHSI students will have hands-on learning with micro- and nanotechnology to explore objects that the students cannot see but know exists. Microencapsulation technology is used hold invisible ink. Silver nanoparticles are used to keep clothes from getting smelly, and in hospitals, to keep germs away. Encapsulating nanoparticles is one way scientists are designing drug delivery systems to treat disease. New instruments at College of the Canyons, like the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), will allow students to ‘see’ this new dimension.
