Instructors

Keith Rypka

Keith Rypka is a design engineer by schooling and a manufacturing engineer by career.  Keith’s career began as a mechanical engineer in Santa Barbara in the hard disk supplier industry.  Keith then spent four years as a product engineer in the medical device field working on manufacturing process development and improvement as well as new product design and development.  Keith has finished his class work and is working on his thesis in order to obtain his Master of Arts in Industrial Design from San Francisco State University.  The past summer he taught SolidWorks CAD software at both SFSU as well as CCSF.  Keith is familiar with aspects of manufacturing technology ranging from high volume stamping, CNC machining, 3D CAD design, PLC control systems, laser welding, vacuum forming, injection molding, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

Course Description

Ever wondered how things are designed and created? In our Design and Fabrication workshop students will learn about the world of 3D CAD design and standard part fabrication techniques used to make different types of parts by modeling a catapult design in class. Students will craft a catapult by cutting, drilling, and punching metal and wood materials. The students will participate in a contest at the end of the week to measure the catapults accuracy, and shooting distance. A brief history of catapults and trebuchets will also be discussed. Come join the fun!

For more information on the building of the catapult, see: http://www.sierracollegetraining.com/techexp_program.php
