New Students

Please take advantage of the various resources available to assist and advise new students:

· Sign up for a New Student Advisement workshop. Students will complete a first-semester educational plan as part of this workshop experience.
· Visit the Counseling Department and talk with a Program Advisor.  Program Advisors work at the front desk of the Counseling Department and can help:
o   Explain certificate, associate degree, and transfer requirements.
o   Connect students to campus resources.
o   Explain campus policies and procedures.
o   Introduce students to online educational tools.
· Visit the Career Center.  The COC Career Center provides a number of valuable services to COC students, including:
o   Career Assessment
o   MyMajors Workshops
o   Resume writing and Interviewing Skills workshops
o   Appointments with Career Advisors
· Take a Counseling class.  The Counseling Department offers classes in career exploration, learning strategies, transfer planning, and student success.

If you are a first-time college student, you must wait to request an appointment with a COC counselor until you have completed 12 units or 2 semesters, whichever comes first.  Until that time, new students are able to make an individual appointment with an Academic Advisor.
Academic Advisors meet with new students in 30-minute appointments where they can help explain educational pathways and assist students in developing a one semester educational plan.
