PAL FAQ

General PAL Questions

I only need to take one class of the PAL cohort. Can PAL classes be taken separately?
No. A student must take both (or all 3) classes in the PAL cohort. The classes are linked and cannot be taken separately. Sorry, but there are no exceptions.

I was a PAL student in the past. Do I need to complete the PAL orientation again?
If you completed the PAL orientation and were flagged for PAL in a previous semester, you should still be flagged for PAL unless you skipped a fall or spring semester (you chose not to take any classes at COC for a fall or spring semester). When you skip a fall or spring semester, your flag is erased and you must complete the PAL orientation again.

What are some tips for succeeding in Distance & Accelerated Learning?
Awesome question! Click here to learn more.

Do PAL classes have a waitlist?
Only the first class inly the first class in a PAL cohort has a waitlist because the classes are linked. So, if the PAL cohort you are trying to register for is full, you would need to get on the waitlist for the first class in that cohort.

Does the online orientation work on all computers?

The orientation requires the Adobe flash player plugin installed on your web browser.  If you do not have this plugin installed, you will not be able to view the orientation. Also, the orientation is not yet available on tablets or smartphones (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.).

How long will the orientation take?

It should take about 20-30 minutes of your time.

What happens if the orientation “locks up”?

If it appears to get stuck, click on the navigation bar in the orientation to try and jump back to the previous section.

What if the orientation keeps giving me a lower score than I earned or sends me in a loop?

If you are experiencing problems with the orientation (completely frozen, it sends you in a loop, or gives you a score lower than what you should have earned), we recommend you try again on another browser or computer. Many students have found this to solve the problem. If you cannot get it to work in any other browser or computer, contact our office so we can schedule you for one of our face-to-face orientations.

Will I need to complete all sections of the orientation?

Absolutely. Your information will not be processed if you do not complete all sections. You'll know you're done when you hit the "flag me" button at the end.

What happens if I get questions wrong on the quiz in the orientation?

You must get 100% correct in order to pass the orientation and to get “flagged” as a PAL student. If you do not get 100% correct, hit the “Retake Quiz” button to restart at the first question in the orientation. If you do not hit that button, you will be forced to restart the orientation at the beginning.
