Class Description: Studies the nature of humankind,
culture and society, including concepts and theories used
for their analysis and understanding. Prehistory and
cultural growth, social organization, family systems,
politics and economics, war, religion, values, culture
shock, and applied anthropology are examined.

More than 1,000 additional sources of information directly
related to anthropology may be found on the 1st and 2nd
floor of the Library. Videos are available on the 2nd floor,
and print materials and audio tapes may be found in the main
library collection on the 1st floor. The major collections
are found in sections CC, E, GN, and QL.
Initial instructions for beginning of class: This is
a hybrid class. Chapter presentations in powerpoint format
will be posted on Blackboard. In addition, all homework
assignments and exams will be posted on Blackboard. Meetings
will be once a week, each Saturday from 10.40 am to 1.10 pm
to facilitate questions, review, and watch films. If you
experience technical problems accessing or using Blackboard,
please call the Blackboard Help Desk in the
Teaching-Learning Center (TLC) at Extension 3344 for
assistance. Please do NOT contact the instructor regarding
Blackboard-related problems! If you experience difficulty
accessing Extension 3344, dial O and ask the switchboard
operation for the current Blackboard Student Help Desk
number. However, do email the instructor with any questions
or issues related to course content, schedule, procedures or
requirements.
Testing regulations (included proctoring guidelines
link): A total of 5 quizzes will be given via the
Blackboard system and will cover from 2 to 4 chapters at a
time. These quizzes will be worth a total of 50 points a
piece and will consist of 10 to 25 questions.

OBJECTIVES (SLOS): The following are Student Learning
Outcomes for the course. By the end of the semester each
student should be able to: 1. Explain the reality of culture
in the context of and evidence from the relative differences
between the beliefs, behaviors, life-ways and institutions
of living societies past and present. 2. Critique various
ideas that have emerged from confrontation with the
biological and cultural differences among people: notably
racism, ethnocentrism and relativism. 3. Learn to understand
and appreciate cultural diversity as a key component for
enriching ongoing educational, vocational and personal life
experiences.
