Skilled Teacher Certificate

College of the Canyons’ Skilled Teacher Certificate program is a professional development opportunity for faculty to become familiar with current research on teaching and learning, learn new approaches and techniques to enhance student success, and practice these approaches and techniques in a learning community of fellow teachers. 

A series of professional development workshops and a teaching portfolio project leading to a certificate of completion.

  • 44 hours of workshops and 10 hours for the creation of a teaching portfolio, for a total of 54 hours.

  • Full-timer faculty may request either 3 units towards salary advancement or Flex credit; adjunct instructors may receive 3 hours of Flex pay per semester (total Flex pay 3 hours per semester).

  • To earn the 3 units towards salary advancement, the certificate must be completed within 2 years.

  • Jointly sponsored by Skills4Success, the Institute of Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty Development Committee.

  • All workshops include a significant portion of time devoted to participants applying or working with the information presented.

Modules 1-5 and 8-10 are all required for the certificate, and it is strongly recommended that Modules 1 and 2 be completed prior to taking the other modules. 

  • Module 1: Community College Teaching for the Twenty-First Century: Contexts Outside the Classroom (1 workshop; 2 hours credit) 

  • Module 2: Community College Teaching for the Twenty-First Century: Teaching for a Range of Students (2 workshops; 3 hours credit)

  • Module 3: Theory and Research on Learning (3 workshops; 6 hours credit; includes 1.5 hours of “homework”)

  • Module 4: Different Ways of Teaching and Learning (3 workshops; 6 hours credit; includes 1.5 hours of “homework”)

  • Module 5: Connecting Students with Learning (2 workshops; 3 hours credit)

  • Module 6: Teaching with Technology (2 workshops; 3 hours credit)

  • Module 7: Student Engagement and Motivation (2 workshops; 3 hours credit)

  • Module 8: Best Practices of Assessment (3 workshops; 6 hours credit; includes 1.5 hours of “homework”)

  • Module 9: Effective Classroom Management Skills and Classroom Materials (3 workshops; 6 hours credit; includes 1.5 hours of “homework”)

  • Module 10: Best Practices of Active and Collaborative Learning (3 workshops; 6 hours credit; includes 1.5 hours of “homework”)

  • Capstone Project: Teaching Portfolio (10 hours)

Certificate participants are expected to attend teaching portfolio workshops and complete a teaching portfolio that will be reviewed by the Skills4Success Professional Development subcommittee, the Institute of Teaching and Learning steering committee, and the Faculty Development Committee.
