Called “the people’s requiem,” this masterpiece of deep solace by Johannes Brahms headlines The Santa Clarita Master Chorale’s March concert. Perhaps writing from the composer’s own deep grief, Ein Deutsches Requiem focuses on the living left behind, a powerful musical comfort. Also on the bill, from 20th century American composer Samuel Barber, the Chorale presents “Prayers of Kierkegaard,” a pleasing musical affirmation of the unchanging Divine, written from Barber’s Presbyterian and Quaker roots and reflecting philosopher and preacher Søren Kierkegaard’s deep personal spirituality which claimed “doubt” as part of “faith.”
