The College of the Canyons Information Technology department has been awarded the 2016 Technology Focus Award by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office for its new “registration appointment text message reminder” program.
The program, which debuted in winter 2016, alerts students via text message about their upcoming registration appointment time.
On the day of their registration appointment COC students that have provided the college with a current cell phone number and service provider information will now receive a text message alert 15 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment time.
The program has been credited with vastly reducing the number of students who miss their registration appointment and increasing the number of students who are able successfully register for classes and begin their COC experience.
“It is an honor to be recognized by the Chancellor’s office for the work we have done to use technology to help ensure students get registered for the classes they need,” said Jim Temple, vice president of technology at the college. “Like many of us, students are busy with classes, work and family responsibilities. Because of that we try to do whatever we can to remind them of important dates and appointments.
“We are fortunate at College of the Canyons to have such a talented group of people who visualize ideas and make them happen,” added Temple. “I am thrilled that the Chancellor’s office acknowledged these efforts.”
The Technology Focus Award annually recognizes a community college IT project or program which has identified and solved a significant on-campus problem to the benefit of students, staff and/or faculty.
Nominations are evaluated on the basis of: scope and complexity of the endeavor, technological innovation, benefit to the institution and key constituents, and demonstration of excellence and professionalism. Projects are expected to be innovative and exemplary in nature.
This year’s award was presented during the California Community College Chief Information Systems Officers Association (CISOA) annual convention held in February at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in Garden Grove.
College of the Canyons also received the organization’s Technology Excellence Award in recognition of several new online services designed to enhance student success.
The conference featured the theme “The Future is Now” and was designed with a broad range of offerings appealing to community college IT leaders, technical staff and department employees who regularly interface with their college’s enterprise resource planning and student information systems.
