The College of the Canyons Music Department will present a selection of symphonic music — with a touch of jazz — during its annual ‘Symphonic Jazz’ concert on Friday, March 27, at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center.
The concert will include a showcase of the college’s award-winning Studio Jazz Ensemble and Lab Bands, under the direction of music director KC Manji, and Symphony of the Canyons, under the direction of music instructor Paul Sherman.
The concert is expected to include many popular tunes that audiences of all ages will enjoy. Songs slated for the Studio Jazz Ensemble and Lab Band portion of the concert include “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and a Latin medley of popular songs. Symphony of the Canyons will perform selections such as “Somewhere in Time,” “Minnie the Moocher,” and a medley from the original score featured in the motion picture “Dances with Wolves.”
The two ensembles will then join forces on stage to close the show with a mix of audience favorites, including “I Got Rhythm” and “What a Wonderful World."
“This concert provides an exciting opportunity for both ensembles to meet and collaborate in a fun program,” Manji said. “The orchestra is exceptionally well trained, and I am having a really fun time working with them.
“It’s also an opportunity for the jazz ensemble to share their performance style with string players,” she added, “while teaching about a genre which is new to many of them.”
The concert is scheduled 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, on the main stage of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for COC students and senior citizens.
