Art Gallery to Challenge Perceptions with Music-Inspired Exhibit

Bernardo Feldman – In Red and BlackThe College of the Canyons Art Gallery will present the work of COC music instructor Bernardo Feldman with a multi-sensory, interactive gallery experience designed to question conventional logic and challenge the perceptions of gallery visitors with the upcoming exhibition ‘Bernardo Feldman — In Red and Black.’

Built around Feldman's original score of the same title — which has been described as a compelling and surreal orchestral soundscape — the exhibition is the result of a collaboration among the college’s music, media entertainment arts (MEA), dance, biology and information technology (IT) departments.

In addition to featuring Feldman’s hand written score, the exhibition will also include a recorded musical performance by the CalArts 20th Century Players under the direction of conductor Stephen Lucky Mosko.

Also featured will be COC dance students in several choreographed dance routines scheduled to take place throughout the duration of the exhibition — and performed in response to Feldman’s work.

The college’s MEA department has collaborated with the college’s IT staff to create a visual light show that will to accompany the exhibition and shine on both gallery performers and visitors alike. A biology-inspired multimedia video presentation will also be included.

“The exhibit provides an opportunity for audience to participate and interact as they affect the outcome of the music through their own movements,” said Feldman, “and as they witness images morphing from one abstract shape into another by virtue of their personal interactions with the space around them.”

The exhibition ‘Bernardo Feldman — In Red and Black’ will open Tuesday, April 14, and run through Thursday, April 30.

An artist’s reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 14.

A special panel conversation with Feldman will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 23. Joining the panel will be representatives from the Fine and Performing Arts Division and Art Gallery, as well as the MEA, Dance, Biology and IT departments.

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.

All gallery exhibitions and related events are free and open to the public.
