Open House to Provide Demo of New EMT Ambulance Simulator

Subject: The College of the Canyons Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Department is the first in the state — and one of only 16 in the nation — to incorporate a state-of-the-art ambulance simulator into its program curriculum.

Event: The College of the Canyons EMT department will host an ‘Open House’ event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, May 2, for students and community members interested in learning more about the simulator and its classroom applications. Members of the media are invited to cover the open house. Simulator demonstrations will provide unique photo and video opportunities.

Built by Simulator Solutions, this technologically advanced classroom-learning resource replicates real-world ambulance working conditions by mimicking road movements and other distractions that can occur inside a moving ambulance.

The simulator matches actual ambulance dimensions and includes fully functional interior control panels and storage areas. Interior shelves are stocked with everything found in an actual Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance to help provide added opportunities for students to practice skills including administering CPR, patient assessment, managing patient airways, evaluating vital signs, providing trauma care and recording patient history.

Monday’s open house will feature demonstrations of the simulator, which points to the increasing use of technology needed for EMT training. In coming years, the EMT department will look to expand the breadth and depth of the training services provided by pairing additional technological resources, like the ambulance simulator, with new and expanded classroom facilities to provide students with the best training opportunities possible.

Replacing the EMT program’s current 40-year-old building with an expanded and state-of-the-art learning facility is among the college’s top priorities for future construction at the Valencia Campus. In addition to providing a new home for the college’s EMT department, the new facility would also better position the college to expand other vital career training programs including fire technology, nursing and administration of justice.

Location: College of the Canyons Valencia Campus; Towsley Hall, Room 101 — 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355.

Contact: Eric Harnish, COC Public Information Office — (661) 362-3429.  Media members are asked to call if they plan to attend so the Public Information Office can make arrangements for convenient parking.
