Help the Children & COC to Host Veterans Appreciation Day Event June 25

As a show of gratitude to the men and women who have served in the U.S. military, College of the Canyons and ‘Help the Children’ have partnered to host the 4th Annual Veterans Appreciation Day Event, being held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at the Valencia campus.

The event will provide active and retired military members with access to array of community resources and support services. Additional event partners include the Veterans Advocacy Network, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars USA, and the COC Veterans Resource Center.

“We wish to bridge our military generations, and unite as a community to express our gratitude to our veterans,” said Michael Santomauro, director of the non-profit organization Help The Children, which is dedicated to aiding veterans, children and their families, and providing global disaster relief.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. active and retired military members will have the opportunity to receive free home improvement supplies, which have been donated by the Framing Hope Foundation.

Items will include flooring, rugs, cabinets, fixtures, potting soil, tools, and household appliances. In addition to free supplies, there will be vocational opportunities from the Santa Clarita Valley dedicated to supporting veterans.

Attendees will also be able to obtain information about the college’s Veterans Resource Center, while learning how to utilize their VA education and vocational benefits for both veteran students and veteran dependents. During the 2015-16 academic year, the college’s Veterans Resource Center served 1,253 veterans and veteran dependents.

“It is an honor to be able to show our appreciation for veterans at the community level and to assist them in accessing the GI Bill to reach their education goals,” said Renard Thomas, director of the COC Veterans Resource Center.

The event will be held in college parking lot No. 8, located adjacent to Cougar Stadium (Valencia Blvd. entrance).

Veterans will be required to show Veterans Admin DD214 or an active military ID in order to participate.
