Art Gallery’s First Fall Exhibit Runs Sept. 2 to Oct. 2

Featuring Works from Nationally Renowned Public Artist May Sun

Note: Due to circumstances beyond our control, the opening has been delayed until Sept. 3.
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery will present a collection of works by nationally renowned, Los Angeles-based public artist May Sun, as the first exhibition of the college’s upcoming 45th Anniversary year.

Having been exhibited both nationally and internationally, Sun’s work is primarily based in sculpture, multimedia installation and photography.

“In the Studio and Out in Public” will include an integrated body of recent studio work, including mixed-media installations and paintings, as well as the documentation of Sun’s multiple commissions in public art spanning more than two decades.

“Some of the images in my paintings have a direct connection to the themes in my public art work, while others remain completely autonomous and spring from pure intuition,” said Sun. “Balancing the private and the public makes for an integrated whole.”

Sun has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including two National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Visual Artist’s Fellowships and a Getty Fellowship for the Visual Arts.

Her public art commissions include the Hollywood and Western Red Line Subway Station in Hollywood; Union Station Gateway Center, Los Angeles; City Hall in Culver City; Warner Center, Woodland Hills; San Antonio (Texas) International Airport; Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, Mass., and Robert F. Kennedy Inspiration Park at the site of the former Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

In addition, Sun’s installation “UnderGround” is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

“May is only the second artist we have shown who has maintained a successful career as a public artist, but this exhibition will showcase both her public and private works,” said Larry Hurst, director of the College of the Canyons Art Gallery. “I am very excited to have an artist of this stature share her work and her insight with our students.”

The exhibition will open Tuesday, Sept. 2 and run through Thursday, Oct. 2.

An artist’s reception is scheduled 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. A conversation with the artist will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.
