College of the Canyons to Host McKeon Leadership Forum Nov. 6

Subject: College of the Canyons, the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corp. and U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (Ret.) proudly present the McKeon Leadership Forum, with a special keynote presentation from Gen. John F. Kelly, United States Marine Corps Commander, U.S. Southern Command.

Event: The public is invited to take part in the McKeon Leadership Forum as College of the Canyons launches its endowment for the McKeon Scholars Award and officially announces the establishment of the McKeon Archive at the college’s Valencia campus.

The special presentation from Gen. Kelly will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to hear from one of the country’s highest-ranking military leaders as he discusses some of the security challenges facing the nation.

A career Marine, Gen. Kelly first enlisted in 1970. After earning his degree from the University of Massachusetts, he returned to the Marine Corps as a commissioned officer, launching a career marked by consistent promotion, advanced education and combat leadership. 

As commander of the U.S. Southern Command, Gen. Kelly is responsible for the implementation of the nation's defense strategies in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Gen. Kelly came to U.S. Southern Command from his previous position as senior military assistant to the secretary of defense. Before that, he spent three years leading Marine Expeditionary Forces in Iraq. 

A graduate of the National War College, Gen. Kelly also attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the School for Advanced Warfare.
