January 29, 2008 Gallery Presents Work of Father-and-Son Photographers Photographers Melvin and Michael Nelson, father and son, are the subject of a moving and amusing exhibit to open at the College of the Canyons Art Gallery on Feb. 5. The aesthetic connection between this father-and-son duo may not be apparent, but the impact of the father's work on the son is unmistakable. "This exhibition allows the viewer to witness two distinct sensibilities expressed through photography but with a different intent and style," said gallery Director Larry Hurst. The exhibit runs through February 28. Melvin Nelson photographed his three sons as they grew up in Illinois during the 1950s and '60s. With the backdrop of vacation destinations such as Disneyland, these images take on an additional historic significance. "Utilizing an instinctual gift for composition and an intuitive use of equipment," Hurst said, "he created works that might bring to mind the photographs of Diane Arbus or Elliott Erwitt." "There are reasons sons become photographers," said Michael Nelson. The inspiration generated by his father's work laid a groundwork for his own development. In contrast to the sometimes amusing work of his father, Michael's photographs are cool and elegant images from the series "Floorwork," which he shot using a long exposure at floor level, creating fluid effects similar to those found in painting. A reception for the artists will be held in the gallery from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. The public is encouraged to attend. The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is located in Mentry Hall in the center of the Valencia campus. It is open to the public 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
