Event: The Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees and Chancellor Dr. Dianne Van Hook will host a groundbreaking ceremony to officially begin construction of the new 46,000-square-foot, two-story Student Services & Administration Building.
Demolition of the previous A Building began in December, while the college was closed for the winter holiday period, and concluded before the start of the spring semester in February.
Included on the new building’s first floor will be an expanded Admissions & Records office featuring new computer labs and kiosks for student use, along with an official college ‘welcoming center’ to help ensure students and campus visitors are able to access the appropriate campus department or destination for their needs. Plans also call for the inclusion of a new Financial Aid office and expanded college switchboard and mailroom area.
The second floor of the office will also house additional computer kiosks, along with several other key student service departments including the college’s counseling department, Transfer Center and Career Center. Additional space has also been set aside to accommodate the college’s Student Services, Instruction, and Public Information Offices.
“The ability for students to apply and register for classes, check the status of their financial aid disbursements, meet with a counselor, explore their transfer options or research a new career path -- all in one location -- will be more convenient, and time efficient, than ever before,” said Michael Wilding, assistant superintendent-vice president of student services. “By providing increased access to these services, it’s our hope that students will be able to seek out and explore even more of the academic, job training and career opportunities available at COC.”
The roughly $17.8 million demolition/construction project will be paid for with a combination of Measure M general obligation bonds and state matching funds.
The new building is scheduled for completion prior to January 2015.
