Art Gallery to Feature Celebrated Irish-American Painter

Legendary U2 frontman Bono has described this artist’s work as “brilliant…God’s creations with the colour turned up.”

He is revered from his native Ireland all the way to the self-described “glossy barbarity of Los Angeles” that he now calls home.

His pieces are included in the collections of Sir Ben Kingsley, Mick Jagger, George Lucas, Faye Dunaway, Nick Nolte and Dennis Hopper, just to name a few.

And now, artist Patrick Morrison’s work will be proudly presented in the College of the Canyons Art Gallery, October 6-31.

“Patrick’s work has an intense color sense and fluid style that has only strengthened over time,” said Larry Hurst, director of the college’s Art Gallery. “When I look at the work I see connections to artists such as Max Beckman, Edward Hopper and even Claude Monet, yet the style is unmistakably his own.”

Working in Los Angeles and his native Ireland for the past 35 years Morrison has fine-tuned his painting style -- mostly painting works involving the human figure -- while cultivating an ever-growing array of collectors.

“I have found that the more I can penetrate the appearance of things, the more fluent I become in conveying my own inner sensations,” commented Morrison in a past interview. “I revel in the fact that in this age of miraculous technological innovation, the painter armed with his paint and brushes, can still engage in the same solitary drama, as that engaged in by kindred souls all down the ages and back to the caves.”

A reception for this exhibition will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday October 6, at the College of the Canyons Art Gallery, located on the college’s Valencia campus. In addition, Morrison will speak about his work during a special artist reception in the gallery at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 20.

The Patrick Morrison exhibition and all related events are free and open to the public.

The COC Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors unable to visit the gallery during these hours are welcome to call (661) 362-3612 to make a viewing appointment.
