Hardware in the The Learning Center (TLC)
The Learning Center (TLC) Computer Lab offers students the opportunity to work on fully equipped machines with updated technology. All of the computers are networked to Hewlett-Packard laser printers.* Technology such as: 6-in-1 memory card reader compatable with most cameras, Paragon Braille Printer, two photocopiers, headphone check-out, free Wi-Fi, and designated areas for lap top use complete with charging station, are avaliable to current College of the Canyons students. Computer use is for College of the Canyons academic work only. Use of computers for non-academic endeavors is prohibited.
Software
All of the computers are loaded with the most current versions of: Microsoft Office Professional 2010 which includes Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, Adobe CS6 which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and Indesign. Specialized programs such as Quickbooks Pro, SPSS, Solidworks, and Minitab Statistics are also avaliable for student access. The Learning Center (TLC) supports the classes taught in Computer Information Technology, Multimedia, and Computer Science Departments.
There are tutorials for Beginning Algebra (Math 057/058), Introductory Algebra (Math060), Intermediate Algebra (Math 070), College Algebra (Math 103), MiniTab, and MySkills Tutor for English grammar. We also provide tutorials for biology, chemistry, psychology and many continuing education programs for nursing students. Internet access is available for research for any class. In addition, access to all online databases such as Proquest and Encyclopedia Britannica are available.
Blackboard Support
An additional service provided by the Computer Department of The Learning Center (TLC) is student Blackboard Technical Support. Every computer tutor has been trained and certified as a student administrator of the Blackboard Learning Management System. Tutors are available by phone, by email, or in person to answer questions and provide technical support to College of the Canyons students taking an online or hybrid class.
Services and Printing
Computer tutoring services are offered free of charge to any College of the Canyons student. Student Identification is required for all students who wish to utilize services in The Learning Center (TLC), in both the Valencia and Canyon Country Campus. Student ID may be obtained in the office of Student Development, STNC 102. Tutors who know Computer Information Technology programs are available to help during normal operating hours. No appointments are necessary for tutoring; however, in order to print a document, students must purchase a re-loadable print card. Each printed document is 10 cents per page. Print cards cost $1.00 initially. With this initial purchase, students will recieve 50 cents worth of printing. After the purchase of the print card, the full dollar amount will be added with each additional refill. Print cards can be conveniently refilled at any time with 1, 5, and 20 dollar bills.
*Students must purchase a print card in order to print in The Learning Center (TLC).

Computer Information Technology:
The Computer Information Technology (CIT) Department offers an associate degree in Computer Information Technology as well as various certificates in office systems, computer applications, and Web technologies. The Department specializes in providing state-of-the-art education in computer literacy, computer software applications, Internet and Web technologies, e-commerce, and vocationally oriented job-training.
All of the The Learning Center (TLC) CIT Computer Tutors are knowledgeable in the Microsoft office programs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Tutors are able to help with formatting questions regarding these programs. In Word a tutor can help with any questions regarding MLA formatting, such as margins, double space, hanging indent, header/footer, and more. A tutor can also help with questions regarding Excels formulas, charts or formatting. Also, they are able to help with adding movie and sound to a Power Point presentation, as well as gathering information in Access.
Computer Science:
Computer science is an exciting program dealing with the problems in organizing, representing, manipulating and presenting information in an automatic processing environment. Computerized information systems are being developed and used in almost every field. The goal of the computer science program is to provide an understanding of the functions of the modern computer and operational skills in program development. There is an increasing demand for software engineers as anything that plugs into a wall outlet or runs on a battery has a microcontroller or microprocessor at its core and therefore an embedded program running.
Our computer science tutors can help you with your C++, Java and Visual Basic programming projects, as well as other programming languages. They also can help you go over computer science concepts and study for exams. Our computers have Netbeans and Microsoft Visual Studio on them, so just come in with your code and your questions and we’ll be happy to help you.
Graphic and Multimedia Design:
The Graphic and Multimedia Design program at College of the Canyons offers degrees, certificates and classes in design. Through a project-based curriculum, students learn to combine images and text to communicate identity branding, logo design and advertising concepts. They create and prepare digital art for career opportunities in prepress, print and screen media, web/interactive design, interface design, motion graphics, digital video production, game design, video graphics, computer-related illustration and imagery, graphic design, graphic arts, digital photography and art direction.
Our Graphic and Multimedia Design Tutors are experts with Photoshop, InDesign, Flash and Dreamweaver. The Photoshop tutor can help you understand all the tools in the program and concepts such as layering and masking. The InDesign tutor can help you create a flyer, poster or even a magazine. Our Flash tutor can instruct you to add animation, videos and interactivity to your web pages. The Dreamweaver tutor can teach how to create your own web page.
