COURSE DESCRIPTION

Drawing II and drawing III are drawing classes with an emphasis on drawing the human figure. The class will be taken on a step-by-step approach to understanding the human form. Traditional and contemporary drawing techniques that will utilize a variety of drawing materials will be used. We will also explore compositional and design fundamentals as they apply to the human figure. The course will include a study of artistic anatomy. Particular attention will be given to gesture drawing and relative proportion. Upon completion of the course the student should be able to demonstrate an increased understanding of the representation of the human form in pictorial space.  The student should also be able to analyze and manipulate pictorial space and compositional relationships. The student should be able to demonstrate creative skills in visual problem solving and associate general concepts and processes in 20th century drawing with your own work. Lectures, class discussions, critiques and technical demonstrations will accompany the studio sessions.

Student learning outcomes for DRAWING II ART 124B & DRAWING III ART 224A:

LAB:  1.Students will be able to Demonstrate through drawings a basic understanding of human anatomy as it applies to drawing the human figure and develop drawings of the human form from compositional planning, structure and sighting to suggestion of volume, value and depth while effectively integrate technique, craftsmanship, content and inventiveness in a composition.

LECTURE:  2.Students will be able to analyze and make aesthetic judgments about their own work, the work of their peers and notable artists using correct terminology.

The Textbook that I will be referring to is “Artistic Anatomy” by Paul Richer, Watson-Guptill Publications. ISBN 0-8230-0297-7 Paperback edition 1986. There are many artistic anatomy books available that will work for the class and I will be giving detailed lectures and demonstrations concerning artistic anatomy. You may or may not want to get a reference book to assist you.

 

Attendance. Attendance is extremely important, as much of your work will be produced during scheduled class meetings. Excessive tardiness /absences will affect the quality of your artwork and consequently your grade in the class.

 

It is my intention to collect at least one drawing from you per session.

 

EVALUATION AND GRADING

WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:

 

1.      Demonstrating proficiency in the perceptual, technical and conceptual aspects of drawing the human form in class assignments.

2.      Portfolio evaluation and presentation.

3.      Active and constructive participation during critiques.

4.      Effective use of class and lab time.

5.      Submission of drawings and drawing projects on time.

6.      Proficiency of drawing techniques.

CALENDAR

Professional models will be incorporated into the schedule as they become available. The lecture and critique schedule is tentative as a result of model availability and the pace of the class.

 

Lecture and critique schedule:

Week #1 On Monday 8/22/2011 & Wednesday 8/24/2011 we will review the course objectives, necessary drawing supplies for the course and class calendar. Gesture drawing and relative proportions will be discussed, please refer to plates 108, 109 and 110 in the textbook.

 

Week #2 On Monday 8/29/2011 & Wednesday 8/31/2011 we will be conducting studies of the foot. Please refer to plates 28, 29,31 and 67 in the text. We will also look at the figures movable masses and their relationship to gesture drawing.

 

Week #3 Monday 9/5/2011 is a holiday. On Wednesday 9/7/2011 we will consider ways of developing a schematic drawing. We will also be looking at the anatomy of the hand see plates  #22 figure 4, 23 anterior view, 24 posterior view, and 25 lateral and medial views.

 

Week #4. On Monday 9/12/2011& Wednesday 9/14/2011 we will continue our study of the hand, hand to elbow. Please refer to plate numbers 57,58, and 59 of the text.

 

Week #5. On Monday 9/19/2011 & Wednesday 9/21/2011 we will study the anatomy of the hand to shoulder. See plates 59,60 and 61.

 

Week #6. On Monday 9/26/2011 & Wednesday 9/28/2011 we will cover the anatomy of the foot to the knee. Refer to plates 32-35 and 65-71 of the textbook. I will describe and assign the midterm project on Wednesday 9/28/2010.

 

Week #7. On Monday 10/3/2011 & Wednesday 10/5/2011 we will be discussing the function and anatomy of the pelvis. We will begin with a study of the anterior view. Please see plates 12-15 (pelvis) 32-35 (leg) 63,68,70 and 71 (muscles).

 

Week #8. On Monday 10/10/2010 & Wednesday 10/12/2011 we will continue our study of the pelvis by looking at the posterior view to the knee. See plates 12-17 (bones) 52, 64, 69, 70 and 71 muscles. I will discuss the final project with you at this time.

 

 

Week #9.On Monday 10/17/2011& Wednesday 10/19/2011 we will be concentrating on the anterior view of the torso. Refer to plates 16,51 and 53.

 

 

Week #10. On 10/24/2011& 10/26/2011 the scapula will be studied. Please refer to plates 23-25 and 42-44. I will also introduce the final drawing project. This project will require you to complete the artwork outside of class.

 

Week #11. On Monday 10/31/2011 & Wednesday 11/2/2011 we will be studying the posterior view of the torso. Please refer to plates 17 and 54.

 

Week #12. On Monday 11/7/2011 & Wednesday 11/9/2011 we will begin studying the head it’s skeleton and proportion. Refer to plates 1 and 2 of the textbook.

 

Week #13. On Monday 11/14/2011 & Wednesday 11/16/2011 we will take a quick look at the neck and shoulder yoke. See plates 41-47 for reference.

 

Week #14. Monday 11/21/2011 & Wednesday 11/23/2011 will be drawing lab days concentrating on portraiture.

 

Week #15. Monday 11/28/2011 &Wednesday 11/30/2011 will be drawing lab days.

 

Week #16. Is finals week. On Monday 12/5/2011& Wednesday 12/7/2011 we will conduct final critiques for both Drawing II and Drawing III All students are required to attend both critique sessions!
