ART-140 (83259) Beginning Design: Two Dimensional Media

James F. Lorigan

Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00AM-11:05AM in room MENH-234

Units: 3.00 - UC:CSU, May Be Taken Once for Credit CAN ART 14

Studies elements and principles of design with special emphasis on structure, color, and 2-D composition through experimental media; provides basic fundamentals for 2-D oriented art courses.

The class will consist of lecture, analysis and studio time. This course provides experience with materials and the processes involved in the basic approaches to 2D Design.  More specifically Art-140 is designed to encourage graphic creativity and professional skill in the development of design concepts. Emphasis is placed on the formal elements of art: line, shape, texture, value and color as well as understand the unifying principles of art: harmony, variety, balance, proportion, dominance, movement and economy.

Attendance is extremely important, as much of your work will be completed in the lab during class time. Excessive tardiness and absences will reflect on the quality of your work and consequently negatively affect your final grade. I cannot assist you if you are not attending the class. You will be asked to produce numerous daily design exercises and at least 10 finished works during the term in which you will be able to demonstrate your design skills as well as your understanding of the basic principles of design. You will also be asked to develop and support their basic concepts as they pertain to image selection. The time spent in class on each project will vary. Near mid-term and near the final as part of the course, each student will be required to do two gallery/museum visits. We may have the opportunity to do this as a group. A one-page type written critique of the exhibition or the curator's thesis will be due after each visit. Or you may select an artist/designer to research. If you choose the research project you will be asked to deliver a brief oral report to the class. Note: If you need additional time to complete a project or report or if you require any special accommodations, please notify me in a timely manner so that I may assist you. Otherwise, you will be expected to adhere to the information included on this course syllabus.

Sketchbook/Design diary

Your sketchbook is a tool for recording the things you see as well as the things you think about. It is a place for developing concepts and visual ideas.

It is a place for scribbling, doodling, visual experimentation and notes.                Your sketchbook is a place for, thumbnail sketches and design modifications. It is also a great place for written ideas. You can cut and paste images and text source material into your sketchbook from a variety of magazines, newspapers and web sites. A design diary specifically is the assembly of materials and thoughts that went into the creation of a particular artwork or artworks and can be included as part of a sketchbook. Revisiting a design diary or sketchbook can often inspire the creation of new work. Keep it with you and bring it to class. You never know when your musing will inspire you. The sketchbook is part of your portfolio and will be due before the final critique.
