This workshop will educate parents of children with Special Needs about the assessment process, the Individual Education Plan (IEP), the services that are available through the school districts and community, and what additional resources are available to assist parents.

Friday, November 3, 2006 – Autism Spectrum Disorder: Early Detection and What you Can Do

1 in 166 children are diagnosed with Autism.  Come find out about Autism Spectrum Disorder, the causes of ASD, the characteristics of a child diagnosed with Autism, how Autism is diagnosed and what are some of the latest treatment interventions.

Saturday, November 18, 2006 – Looking at Depression: What are the Warning Signs and How to Get Help

This workshop gives an overview of the diagnosis of depression.  Children who have experienced disruption and separation from their families may exhibit signs of depression.  Come and discover the warning signs and how you can help.

Saturday, November 18, 2006 – Understanding Teen Sexuality

Many parents feel ill-equipped to communicate information on sexuality to their children.  Unfortunately, adolescents receive much of their information on matters of acceptable sexual behavior from peers, media, and other societal influences.  This workshop will guide parents in becoming more comfortable with communicating with their teens on matters of sex.  When parents communicate family values, teenagers know what is expected of them.  If it is not shared in the home, it will be shared outside the home.

Friday, January 19, 26, and February 2, 2007 -  Active Parenting 1, 2, 3, and 4

This three-week series looks at the various stages of early childhood development from ages 1 – 4.  Topics of discussion are:  understanding misbehavior, listening and talking to young children, the art of setting limits, and the importance of providing discipline.  Each participant will receive Parenting Your 1 – 4 Year Old by Michael Popkin, Ph. D.  Priority of materials will be given to those who are pre-registered.

Friday, February 9, 2007 – Positive Parenting: Setting Limits & Providing Discipline that Works

Saturday March 3, 2007 – Learning Disabilities: Looking at How the Mind Functions and What Parents Can Do to Help Their Child

What are the different types of learning disabilities that your child may be dealing with?  How do they affect their schoolwork as well as their emotional and behavioral state? In this workshop, you will experience first hand what it feels like to have a learning disability and how you can assist your child who is diagnosed with a learning disability.

Friday, March 16, 2007 – Chemical Dependency: Understanding the Warning Signs & How to Get Help

As a caregiver, have you ever asked yourself any of these questions?  How would I know if my foster child was using drugs or alcohol?  What are the signs and symptoms?  How would I know if they really had a problem with it?  What are the most commonly used drugs kids take and what are their effects?  Why would they be using drugs?  How and where can I get help?  Answers to these questions will be discussed as well as the warning signs and symptoms of use and abuse.  Resources will be provided.

Friday, March 16,  2007 – Eating Disorders & Obesity: Understanding the Problem and Discovering a Unified Approach to Prevention and Treatment

The Department of Child and Family services is a big organization and knowing how to get what you need from them can be daunting!  Learn from someone who works for DCFS how to get your needs met from this organization and how they can better work with you. Once you know what DCFS can do for you and the services they can provide then learn what you can do with this information to get the most help available to you.

Saturday, March 24, 2007 – Reducing the Risks on the Information Highway: How to Have an Internet Safe Home

Many parents are concerned about internet safety.  As caregivers we need to filter out the negative influences in our children’s life.  Come find out from an expert from the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office what you can do to monitor what your children are viewing on the internet and how you can make your home an internet safe home
