Economics
202 – Spring 2012
Lea
Templer
Welcome to Economics 202, Microeconomics, Sections #85470.
This course will be Web only – 100% online. You will be watching videos for the
individual modules on your Thinkwell Website, then going to the Blackboard
Website for other assignments and all exams online.
The class starts February
6th and ends on May 31st . The course will be available on COC’s Blackboard
system beginning Monday, February 6th. You will be dropped from the class if
you do not log in and add your personal information in the Blackboard and
Thinkwell web sites by 10:00 p.m on February 8th. The
assignments will begin right away.
If the class is closed and you are not currently enrolled
and think that you would like to add this course, send me an email indicating
your interest. All wait-listed students will receive priority over those not already
wait-listed. Remember, too, that COC has switched to an automated waitlist
system which means that you might automatically be added to the course if you
are on the official waiting list.
As this class is 100% online, you will be taking all of
your exams on the Blackboard website. You do not have to come on campus to take
your exams.
What you need to know before you begin:
·
You need to be aware that you will be working alone in front of
your computer.
·
To access the course on the WEB, you will need a computer with a
modem and an account with an Internet Service Provider.
·
You will be doing the assignments and exams on the COC-Blackboard
web site, http://bb8.canyons.edu
·
You will not have
a standard textbook. You will need to
register and buy access to the Thinkwell Macroeconomics Videos at www.thinkwell.com.
o
You will be using both the COC-Blackboard
and Thinkwell company web sites.
·
If you are already familiar with taking online
courses, this class will likely feel
comfortable. If this is the first time you have taken an online
course, you need to be aware that an online
course requires good time management skills a consistently high level of
self-motivation. Although the deadlines are mentioned on the syllabus, I will
remind you that these deadlines are approaching. You may want to do a self
assessment. Are you prepared to take an online
class?

·
There is a significant amount of effort required for success:
watching the videos, doing the practice Thinkwell exercises, quizzes, homework
assignments, discussion board assignments and taking exams.
· FAQs:
o
This website will help you navigate the Blackboard web
site and answer these questions and others: How do I get into the class
website? What is my log-in? How do I add my email address in the Blackboard
website?
o
Click here for the instructions: http://www.canyons.edu/offices/distance_learning/OnlineOrientation/Login.asp
o
When is
the orientation? Where?
·
We do not have a
face-to-face orientation. You will have a Discussion Board assignment to
participate in which will serve as your "first day attendance."
·
How do I know if an online class is for me? How can I gain the
skills to do well in an online class?
o
I highly recommend that students enroll in Couns 070 for these types of questions.
·
Do I have
to take the exams on the days listed on the schedule? Do I have to turn in all
assignments on the day listed in the schedule?
o
No, you may do them earlier. The dates are deadlines: that
is the last day to do the exams or assignments. You may work ahead – you are
encouraged to do so – it’s much better than doing the assignments or exams at
the last minute! The deadlines are all given on the syllabus.
o
Where do I find the Syllabus?
o
You can find the syllabus on my home page at:
http://www.canyons.edu/departments/ECON/syllabi.htm
o
It will be available by June 1st.
