Student Expenses – COC EMT Class – Health Science 151

 

Required Textbooks:
  • AAOS, Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured; 10th   edition, Jones& Bartlett  (aka "the orange book") Check COC Barnes and Noble Bookstore webpage for ISBN.
  • L.A. County Skills Book - available only in COC Barnes and Noble Bookstore.
  • Health Clearance/Physical- A health clearance is required in order for you to participate in class, clinical and ride-alongs.  The Student Health & Wellness Center, located in the Student Center, is able to provide most required immunizations and draw required titers at cost.  The Student Health center will not be able to perform a physical has referrals available for students to a local urgent care for brief physical exam. Please call the Health Center for an appointment 661-362-3259. Cost depends upon provider and student insurance plan.

 

  • Uniform- Navy blue or black slacks (Dickies are OK), COC EMT logo polo shirt (will be available through the COC Barnes and Noble Bookstore),  black leather oxford type shoes or lace-up boots, and a plain leather or military style belt with plain silver buckle. A plain white short-sleeved t-shirt with round neck must also be worn under the polo.  You will need a uniform for ride-alongs and clinicals; your instructor may require you to wear your uniform to class on selected days.  Approximate cost $40-90.

 

  • Safety Vest which meets Federal specifications. Available in COC bookstore) approx $10

 

  • Name badge- A student name badge must be worn in the clinical setting.  The Student Center will provide you with a name badge for the EMT program for approximately $6. You must take proof of paid enrollment in the class to the Student Center in order to receive an EMT Student ID.

 

  • Required supplies- You will need a stethoscope, watch with a second hand, safety glasses/goggles, and HEPA mask (HEPA mask is only needed for ride-alongs).  You can purchase these at any uniform shop or in the bookstore. You will need your stethoscope and watch ASAP for skills practice.  Approximate cost $30-50.

 

  • CPR Card- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider is required. If you have a CPR card that says anything other than the above, it will not be accepted.  College of the Canyons’ CPR classes are offered on a limited basis throughout the school year and are listed as  Health Science 051. Check the COC online schedule for list of available classes.  You can obtain CPR class dates through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. ONLINE CPR cards are not accepted. Approximate cost is $65-90.

 

  • Background check –EMT students complete a background check. Click on Background menu button for additional information. Approx cost $50.

 

  • College of the Canyon fees including unit fees, health fees, ASG fees and parking are are available through the main COC website.

 

  • Other expenses after completion of EMT class- NREMT exam fees, Live Scan fingerprinting, and Los Angeles County/State of California certification fees. Will be discussed in class. Information also available from NREMT, Live Scan vendors and LA County EMS Agency.
