At College of the Canyons, the Credit ESL program is designed for
those wishing to study in higher education. The program,
therefore, is an academic one which focuses on enabling the
students to be successful in the English-language college
classroom and beyond.

Following classes are offered throughout the year:

ESL 060 BEGINNING READING, WRITING & GRAMMAR

Units: 3.00, May Be Taken 2 Times
Reading and writing skills designed to assist non-native
speakers of English toward college- level work. Practice in
basic sentence structure, spelling, vocabulary development,
handwriting. Offered on a credit/no-credit basis only. Units
do not apply to the associate degree.

ESL 070 READING & WRITING SKILLS

Units: 3.00, May Be Taken 2 Times
Intensive practice in writing basic English patterns;
fundamentals of punctuation, spelling, vocabulary development,
grammar, reading and writing of short paragraphs and essays.
Offered on a credit/no credit basis only. Units do not apply
to the associate degree.

ESL 071 INTERMEDIATE LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Units: 3.00, May Be Taken 2 Times
Recommended Preparation: ESL-061
For intermediate students of English as a Second Language
who need further practice in listening and speaking. Offered
credit/no-credit and does not apply to the associate degree.

ESL 080 INTERMEDIATE READING & COMPOSITION

Units: 3.00, May Be Taken Once for Credit
Intensive written practice in complex sentence patterns.
Reading and writing paragraphs and short essays. Punctuation,
vocabulary development, and spelling.

ESL 081 ADVANCED LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Units: 3.00, May Be Taken 2 Times
Recommended preparation: ESL-071
For advanced students of English as a Second Language who
need practice in listening and speaking on the college
campus. Students practice listening, speaking, notetaking,
and pronunciation skills through a variety of materials
including lectures and current event broadcasts. Also includes
presentations, conducting interviews and surveys, holding
small group discussions, and recordings of speech. Offered
credit/no-credit and is non-degree applicable.

ESL 100 ADVANCED READING & COMPOSITION

Units: 4.00 - UC:CSU, May Be Taken 2 Times
Reading, composition, and grammar for more advanced non-native
speakers, designed to prepare students for transfer-level courses.

CWEXP 188 COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION

The Cooperative Work Experience (CWEE) program has been
integrated into departments throughout the college. The
program allows students to apply knowledge gained from
college courses in an actual work setting. Work may be
paid or unpaid (volunteer) work. CWEE internships are also
available that allow qualifying students to sample career
choices and improve job readiness skills. Information
regarding student eligibility requirements for participation
in this program is available in the CWEE office or may be
obtained by attending one of the many CWEE orientation
sessions.
NOTE: Students must be working at least 75 hours per
semester in a paid job or 60 hours per semester in an
unpaid job.
