Welcome to CIT 170 Online!

Web Site Development 1 (CIT 170) is a 3-unit course in the foundations of web development. In this course students are afforded the opportunity to acquire the skills necessary to develop web sites with XHTML and CSS code. No authoring tools or dedicated software applications are needed or used in this class. In fact, please consider the use of authoring tools (i.e., Dreamweaver, GoLive, Expression, FrontPage, etc.) to be “illegal” in this class for the design of web sites. The goal of this class is for students to become proficient with XHTML code and CSS formatting, both of which are easy to learn and require no special skills, such as math or computer programming, to master.

CIT 170 is the first course that should be taken in the five course sequence leading to a Certificate of Specialization in Web Site Development and credit is transferable to CSU. Please visit the CIT Department Web site (http://www.coc.cc.ca.us/departments/Info_Tech/completion.htm) for more information on this certificate. Associate of Science degrees in both Web Development and Web Publishing and Design are under development and CIT 170 will be applicable to those programs as well.

Although this is a beginning-level course and no special skills are required, students should have familiarity with the Windows operating system (especially file management), the Internet, and e-mail, including the sending and downloading of attachments.

First day of class: August 24, 2009.

Blackboard Accounts

The course will be administered entirely in Blackboard, the primary classroom management system used at College of the Canyons. All students are issued a Blackboard account once enrollment fees for the class are paid. Accounts are created automatically by computer and take one-to-three business days after fees have been recorded. If you do not pay your fees or register by the first class meeting, you will not have been issued a Blackboard username and password and will be unable to access the class until such issues have been resolved.

All aspects of the course are administered entirely online. Attendance on campus is not required. The course Syllabus and other important information are available in Blackboard. Blackboard is accessible 24x7, but is occasionally inaccessible during the very early morning hours on weekends so that maintenance can be performed.

Information regarding Blackboard usernames and passwords is available on my Web page (http://www.canyons.edu/CIT/strozer.htm). Please read all the information on my Web page and view all videos posted relevant to CIT 170.

The course will be accessible in Blackboard on the first day of class. Students who do not complete the orientation assignment within the first week may be automatically dropped from the class. Students are expected to log into Blackboard daily to check for new announcements and discussion threads.

The course will not be accessible in Blackboard until the first day of class (August 24, 2009).

WEB ACCOUNTS

Free Web accounts on a COC server will be provided to actively enrolled students. Students must read an Acceptable Use Policy in order to activate the Web account. Instructions on accessing your Web space will be provided.

Once you have accessed your Web account, you will use the Submission Template provided on the class Web site to organize your assignments by headings and create links to each assignment under the appropriate heading. Your assignments will be posted to your web space using an FTP client. All students must post their assignments on the COC web server as a graded requirement for the class.
