SALARY/TIMEBASE: $3081-4621 mo./full-time GENERAL INFORMATION : Hours:
40 hrs/wk, 8:00am-5:00pm M-F, includes some evenings and weekends
Duties:
Under general supervision, is responsible for overall operation of the
Library’s Special Collections and Archives Reading Room, the Special
Collections stack operations, and operations pertaining to Special
Collections stored in the automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS).
Maintains security procedures for Special Collections and Archives;
monitors the operation of the security system; processes collections;
assists in preparing for Library exhibitions; supervises Reading Room
operations, which includes assisting researchers, scheduling students
and part-time staff, re-shelving collection reference materials,
retrieving and returning materials to storage and development of
operational procedures; supervise Special Collections stack operations
that include signing-out and re-shelving books and collections, shelf
reading and inventory control, maintenance of shelf organization, and
processing and shelving newly cataloged books; supervises Special
Collections storage operations that include coordination with
Circulation staff responsible for the AS/RS, check-out/in of collections
from the AS/RS, and storing unprocessed and recently processed/cataloged
collections. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, social sciences, or
related field of study OR four (4) years of full-time Library Assistant
II experience that includes public contact/services, experience with
stack planning and management, and identification and development of
procedures. Four years/120 units of college or university may be
substituted for two years of full-time, Library Assistant II experience;
OR two years/60 units of college or university may be substituted for
three years of full-time, Library Assistant II experience. Valid
California driver’s license required. The selected candidate must pass a
fingerprint clearance. Desirable qualifications include lead
work/supervisory experience; public services experience in an academic
or research library; formal training in archival, rare book, or book
arts program; and experience working in a special collections, and/or
archives environment, and/or familiarity with archival and book
collections.
Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of library collection process, classification scheme,
and cataloging; activities, policies, and procedures of the area
assigned; familiarity with conservation practices for archival and rare
book materials, and operation and management of electronic security
systems; and computer applications such as Innovative Interface, Inc.
(III) Millennium online public catalog, Microsoft Word, Excel, and
Access, Acrobat, AS/RS equipment and software, and Bosch security system
with Radionics software. Ability and specialized skills to: coordinate
administrative aspects of the assigned function; implement policy and
procedures; establish work procedures, prioritize tasks, and modify
procedures; resolve problems and perform duties in situations where
policy is general and guidelines are inadequate; apply independent
judgment within the framework of established library policies;
demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness in resolving problems; write
explanatory materials for library users; assist in the implementation of
library computer systems; work under pressure effectively in a busy
environment with multiple concurrent demands; work both as part of a
team, and independently as needed; work effectively and cooperatively
with students, staff, researchers, and members of the general public;
and lift 30 pounds on a regular basis.
