•Acclaimed for his Spanish-language operas which are increasingly performed in North, Central and South America • Opera houses which have programmed Catán's works include San Diego, Houston, Los Angeles, Seattle and Opera de Colombia • Noted for his lyrical and impassioned vocal writing which has attracted leading singers • Works attempt to find a musical equivalent of the 'magic realism' of Gabriel Garcia Marquez • Orchestration is an extension of the lush sound world of Debussy, Ravel, Puccini and Strauss • Success as composer for film and TV, including music for the soap opera "El Vuelo del Aguila".
