Joe Kearney has taught at College
of the Canyons since the beginning of 2002. He is currently
completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Studies,
with a major in composition, from the Thornton School of Music
at the University of Southern California. Joe holds an M.M.
(summa cum laude) from U.S.C., where he received the
departmental award for studio/jazz guitar and was nominated
for membership in both Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda honor
societies. At the Berklee College, he received a B.M. in
Applied Music, graduating with honors.
He has studied jazz ear training with Dr. Thom Mason;
studio/jazz guitar with Barry Galbraith, Pat Metheny, and Joe
Diorio; and composition with Grammy Award winning composer
Vince Mendoza.
A versatile musician, Joe has
performed or toured with numerous Broadway Musical
Productions, including those under the direction of Bob
Fossie, Michael Bennet, and Mitch Lee, and for a variety of
solo artists such as Anne Margaret, Jane Oliver, Jack Jones,
Lorna Luft, Jerry Lewis, Carol Channing, Billy
Eckstein.
In the field of jazz, Joe has
performed with artists on both coasts, including Jimmy
Giuffre, Karl Berger, The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Lanny
Morgan, Buddy Collette, Tony Rizzi’s Wire Choir, Jimmy
Cleveland, Lou Levy, Bill Mays, and many others.
Recently, he was a featured
soloist on a CD released from the Southern California Jazz
Company on Sea Breeze Records. His
community college students have been accepted in music
programs at U.S.C., U.C.L.A., Cal State Long Beach, Cal State
Northridge, and the Berklee College of Music.
