The Paralegal Studies Program prepares students for positions as
paralegals in order to improve the accessibility, quality, and
affordability of legal services. Students who successfully complete the
program will have a broad-based understanding of the American legal
system and the practice of law in California; the skills and knowledge
needed to work as a paralegal in civil litigation, bankruptcy or estate
planning law firms; an understanding of and an appreciation of the
ethical rules and regulations applicable to the paralegal and other
legal professionals; a balanced education based on the integration of
legal theory and practical course work; strong written and oral
communication skills; and, the tools necessary to begin a career in a
respected and well-paid profession.
Program Goals:
- Provide students with an understanding of the American legal system
and the role of the paralegal in that legal system.
- Educate, train, and provide students with the legal theoretical
background to perform paralegal tasks in substantive areas of law and
legal specialties.
- Educate and train students in areas of procedural law emphasizing the
paralegal’s role in litigation, mediation, and arbitration.
- Train students in critical paralegal skills such as investigation,
legal research, interviewing, and written and oral communications.
- Educate students to ethically serve the public and the legal system.
- Provide students the tools they need to become contributing members
of the legal profession who will contribute to its advancement.
Program Student Learning Outcome:
The Paralegal Studies student will be able to analyze assignments (e.g.
lecture notes, handouts, and other course material) from all Paralegal
Studies courses to successfully construct a portfolio as reference
resource when working as a paralegal.

semester units of general education; 30 units of legal specialty course
work; and 9 units of additional course work.
Recommended sequence of courses
The courses may be taken in any order, but due to the complexity of the
following courses, it is recommended that students take the following
courses during their second year in the program:
