Welcome to the College of the Canyons Department of Communication Studies.  Our focus of study concerns the ways in which verbal & nonverbal communication impacts the meaning of messages within different contexts.  It is the use of symbols which sets humans apart as unique beings, and it is therefore the study of those symbols and the various ways they are used which grounds a sound college education.

The current changes in telecommunications and technology not only provide challenges to both individual citizens and larger societies, but also signal the increasing importance of understanding the nature of communication within and between families, societies, cultures, and workers.

The Communication Studies Department prepares students to identify and meet the demands of these challenges. Course work emphasizes the development of analytical skills, effective communication practices, and an increased insight into the intersection of human meaning making and the multifaceted conditions of knowing and valuing the world in which  we live.
