COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS

FORENSICS - SPEECH AND DEBATE

College of the Canyons’ award-winning forensics program provides students with the opportunity to hone their public speaking, debate and presentation skills through on-campus tournaments and regional competitions. The confidence, competence and character gained through the forensics experience benefit COC students as they move on to universities and enter the professional world.

Led by an experienced forensics professor, forensics team members:

·       Receive training in the latest competitive speaking methods

·        Understand how and where to access the most up-to-date research

·        Meet new and exciting people from COC and other institutions of higher learning

·        Build their resumes

·        Learn about scholarship opportunities for four-year colleges

·        Are part of a fantastic team!

All forensics team members are required to be enrolled in COC’s forensics course, COMS 190, and attend at least one tournament per semester. COMS 190 is a variable unit course – one to four units depending upon level of involvement in the forensics team.

The COC forensics team participates in many tournaments ranging from novice to the national championships. Areas of competition include:

·        Informative

·        Persuasive

·        Entertainment

·        Oral Interpretation (prose, poetry, dramatic, individual and duo)

·        Extemporaneous

·        Impromptu

·        Parliamentary debate
