Tuesday, September 15, 22, 29, and October 6, 12, & 20, 2009 – Active Parenting of Teens
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

In this six-week series, parents will learn the skills required to meet the challenges of parenting teens and preteens in today’s society.  Parents will learn skills for effectively handling family problems through clear, honest communication and respectful discipline.  Special attention will be given to today’s problems of teen drug use, sexuality, and violence, providing parents with helpful prevention guidelines.  Each participant will receive Active Parenting of Teens Parent’s Guide, by Michael Popkin, Ph.D.

Monday, September 21, 2009- Overcoming Anxiety: Interventions to Help Your Child
9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
 

This workshop will define stress and anxiety and what it looks like in children and adolescents.  Different assessment techniques will be presented and general techniques and interventions will be discussed that will help in lowering stress effects.  Participants will learn about progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing and meditation.

Friday, September 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30, 2009 - Active Parenting Now
9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

In this six week series, parents will learn the skills to help develop cooperation, responsibility, and self-esteem in their children, and prepare them to meet the challenges of teenage years.  This program also teaches parents positive, non-violent disciplinary techniques to avoid struggles, effective communication, and problem-solving strategies.

Monday, September 28, 2009 - Support for Special Needs Children
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
 

If you have a special needs child, parenting can be especially overwhelming.  How do you discipline a special needs child?  Parents of special needs kids are sometimes overprotective and this may lead them to be permissive and not consider much discipline.  This workshop will focus on skills to help you understand your child's behavior and empower you to be a parent who can effectively communicate with your child, discipline, and set limits.

Why does it seem that kids just do not "do what they are told" anymore?  This eye-opening workshop will help you identify misbehaviors you can see in your home right now, and the qualities you want your children to have by the time they become young adults.  Learn the importance of learning new ways to parent, involving more horizontal relationships.

Saturdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, & November 7, 2009 - Cooperative Parenting and Divorce
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This program is designed to assist divorcing or divorced parents in reducing parental conflict, and the risk factors that influence the child's post-divorce adjustment.  It addresses the relationship between separate households created, as a result of divorce.  It is designed to improve the quality of the parental relationship in situations of joint custody, separate maintenance, change of custody, and paternity.

Mondays, October 12, 19, & 26, 2009- Active Parenting, 1234
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

This three-week series looks at the various stages of early childhood development from ages 1 - 4.  Topics of discussion are: understanding misbehavior, listening and talking to young children, the art of setting limits, and the importance of providing discipline.  Each participant will receive Parenting our 1 - 4 Year Old by Michael Popkin, Ph.D.

Thursday, October 15, 2009 - Setting Students Up for Success in School: Creating Homework Schedules and More
6:30 - 8:30 p.m..


If your child struggles with school and/or resists homework, ask yourself, "why?"  Learn the top 5 reasons why students struggle in school and how to avoid them.  Also, this workshop will discuss ADD and learning challenges, power learning and success strategies.

Monday, October 26, 2009 – Eating Disorders and Body Image: Understanding the Problem and Discovering a Unified Approach to Prevention and Treatment

This workshop will educate parents about how to recognize disordered eating and how to prevent childhood obesity.  Nutrition guidelines and resources on where to get help will be discussed.

Tuesdays, October 27, November 3, 10, 17, 24 and December 1, 2009 - Taming the Anger Monster
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

This course is intended to offer adults specific tools on how to control or manage their anger.  These skills can be successfully be applied in the workplace, in relationships, while driving, with one's family, or in any situation where anger control is an issue.

Thursday, October 29, 2009 - The Anti-Bully Tool Kit
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Parents will learn to identify the warning signs of bullying and what to do is your child is being mistreated.  Specific strategies and techniques will be taught to support and empower your child to address bullying behavior - whether he/she is the victim or the perpetrator.

Friday, November 6, 2009 - DCFS 101: What You Need to Know About the Process, Services, and Policies
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

The Department of Child and Family Services is a big organization and knowing how to get what you need from them can be daunting!  Learn from someone who works for DCFS how to get your needs met from this organization and how they can better work with you.  Once you know what DCFS can do and the services they can provide then learn what you can do with this information to get the most help available to you.

Monday, November 9, 2009 Balancing Family Life: How to Take Care of Your Family and Still Take Care of Yourself
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Family life can become quite complicated.  In order to be an emotionally healthy parent, you need to have some self-care in your life.  This workshop gives caregivers the needed tools to balance family life that creates an atmosphere of shared responsibilities to avoid burnout and strive towards a healthy balance of both needs of the adults and the needs of the children in the family.
