In this six-week series, parents will learn the skills required
to meet the challenges of parenting teens and preteens in today’s
society. Parents will learn skills for effectively handling family
problems through clear, honest communication and respectful
discipline. Special attention will be given to today’s problems of
teen drug use, sexuality, and violence, providing parents with
helpful prevention guidelines. Each participant will receive
Active Parenting of Teens Parent’s Guide, by Michael
Popkin, Ph.D.

Monday, September 15, 2008 – The Anti-Bully Tool Kit

Parents will learn to identify the warning signs of bullying and
what to do if you child is being mistreated. Specific strategies
and techniques for school age children will be taught to support and
empower your child to address bullying behavior – whether he is the
victim or the perpetrator.

In this six-week series parents will learn the skills to help
develop cooperation, responsibility, and self-esteem in their
children, and prepare them to meet the challenges of teenage years.
This program also teaches parents positive, non-violent disciplinary
techniques to avoid struggles, effective communication, and
problem-solving strategies. Each participant will receive
Active Parenting Now Parent’s Guide, by Michael Popkin, Ph.D.
Priority of materials will be given to those who are pre-registered.

Teen Scene Unplugged: Understanding the Teen Mind

engaging presentation on how the developing/changing teen brain
impacts teen behavior and decision-making. Parents will come away
with practical ideas and applications that will help them understand
and strengthen their relationship with their teens. Featuring Tina
Bryson, Ph.D., lecturer, parenting educator, and Mindsight
Institute''s Director of Parenting & Development.

the Anger Monster

How to
Talk to Your Kids About Sex

This workshop will cover the basic
principles of adolescent development and human sexuality. Parents
will learn how developmental issues relate to sexual identity and
provide developmentally appropriate information on human sexual
development. Parents will learn communication techniques to help
them better communicate with their teens about sex and will get
helpful tips on starting tough conversations about sexuality.

Character Counts: Building Self-Esteem

This workshop
will help parents to coach kids in the areas of courage, confidence, and
self-esteem, and will boost their children’s ability to persevere
throughout their tot to teen years. Library materials related to
building confidence in kids will be discussed, along with strategies to
enhance student performance. In addition, the character classics will
be introduced and materials for dealing with teen issues will also be
available.

November 7, 2008 – The IEP Process: Gaining Control and Advocating
for Your Children

Many of our children have specialized educational needs. The IEP
process can be quite intimidating. Parents will learn what their rights
are in this process in reaching your child’s educational goals. You
will hear from a certified educational advocate about the IEP process
and how to advocate getting your child’s needs met.

Night: Building Connections With Your Children

parent-child workshop will help families practice connecting,
enjoying one another, and assisting children to solve problems through
play. Parents will be coached by trained professionals as they interact
with their children. Tips will also be given for how to incorporate
play into everyday situations. Learn to set limits with warmth, through
play. Handle emotional moments in a positive, supportive manner and make
every moment with your child special.

Understanding the Explosive Child

An "Explosive Child"
is one whose extreme behaviors leave his or her parents helpless with
fear, frustration, and guilt.
Learn strategies you can use to help your child turn their aggression
into a more positive form of expression. Learn how to
defuse explosive episodes, reduce tension, and improve family
relationships focusing less on reward and punishment and more on
communication and collaborative problem solving.
