Community Service

Since its inception in 1999 the Computer Networking Department at College of the Canyons has been very active in community service work. We have established a donation system with local businesses to receive their old equipment when they upgrade. This provides a continuous supply of equipment for our students to work on and refurbish. These refurbished machines are then donated to non-profit organizations in the Santa Clarita Valley, other parts of California, and even to some international destinations.

SCV-Newhall Optimist Club

Working with campus Computer Support Services and the SCV-Newhall Optimist Club we have been able to place campus surplus computers within the local community.  The Optimist Club works to see that low income students in the community have access to this technology.  They have partnered with the CalWORKS program on campus and some of the college's students have benefited directly through this program.

SCV Senior Center

We have set up a computer lab in the senior complex on Bouquet Canyon Road and are currently working with the Senior Center  in Newhall to set up a lab there as well.

SCV International Program - Sister Cities

Through our partnership with the SCV International Program we have been able to touch the lives of students in other countries. Our global coverage has reached Ecuador, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua (Click here for video), and the Philippines.

Mending Kids International

The department's efforts have also been extended to Mending Kids International, a local organization that provides donated medical care to needy children worldwide. They have provided computers to children from Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and the Philippines so far. An article in the April 8, 2007 edition of the Daily News had this to say about the program:

``We were able to give each child a computer to take home and also sent some computers to our international contacts who help bring these kids to us,'' said Cris Embleton, executive director of Mending Kids, adding that the donation has multipronged benefits.

``We can remain in contact with the child and open up all kinds of opportunities for them,'' Embleton said.

``A lot of our kids will not be able do heavy labor later on in life. This is a tool that can help them obtain a job more suited to their medical conditions and also encourages the child to continue their education.''
