Musique: Paris is the capital of WORLD MUSIC. Each semester, we will feature two francophone musical artists, one contemporary and one "classic." The idea is to introduce you to the great variety of music that is being--and has been-- made by musicians from all parts of the French-speaking world. The key here, the unifying factor is the French-speaking world, and although most of the lyrics you will see and hear are indeed French, there will also be music by francophone artists who sing in other languages. Thus, you'll discover music from Africa--north, central, and west--the Caribbean, Canada, Belgium, and France. Tune in and discover la java, Josephine Baker, zouk, Yves Montand, rai, Serge Gainsbourg, Alpha Blondy, Tabu Combo, Jacques Brel, soukous, Barbara, Kahled, la biguine, Edith Piaf, Les Nubians, Gilles Vigneault, MC Solaar, Fatal Mambo, Cheb Mami, Patricia Kaas, Dalida, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Malavoi, Amina, Georges Moustaki, Rachid Taha, Aznavour, Salif Keita, and many more. Our
contemporary musical artist for fall 2008:

Top of page Our next Paris program will most likely be offered in the summer of 2012. The description (below) of our most recent program will give you a good idea of what it entails. Summer Semester in Paris With College of the Canyons June 10-July 10, 2010 Earn up to six credits by taking courses in Art and French Culture and Conversation
Spend an entire month discovering one of the world’s great capitals. You’ll live in a dorm at the Cité Internationale of the University of Paris (with a single-room option) in a cool neighborhood right across from the famous Parc Montsouris (in the 14th arrondissement). The entire city—and other parts of France—will be your classroom. You will have a bus and subway pass, but you’ll be able to walk to world-famous sites such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Marais (everyone’s favorite Parisian neighborhood), Berthillon (the best ice cream in France), and dozens of hip cafés, restaurants and discos. You’ll actually have enough time to meet people, practice your French, find your favorite café, bakery, outdoor market, park, museum, clothes boutique, department store, bookstore, movie theatre, chocolate shop, church, metro line, etc. and actually frequent them repeatedly. You’ll also have a couple of day trips outside the city (Chartres Cathedral, the palace of Versailles, the city of Rouen, and Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny) and an optional three day-trip to Normandy and Brittany with two overnights in the fabulous town of Saint-Malo. What’s more, your evenings and four three-day weekends will be yours to use as you wish. And if that’s not enough, you will be in Paris for the nation-wide, summer solstice music festival as well as for the start of the Tour de France bicycle race in which American Lance Armstrong will once again be competing. And for you soccer fans, we will be in France for almost all the games of the World Cup Championship. It will take place in South Africa, but watching it in a soccer-crazy country like France is almost as good as being Capetown. Allez les Bleus! Courses: Art 205 (Landmarks of Art), French 150 (French conversation; one section for beginners and one for more advanced students) Cost: $2940 Includes: Housing; use of the Paris facilities of the Accent International Consortium for Academic Programs Abroad; a one-month subway and bus pass; three one-day excursions (Chartres Cathedral, the Palace of Versailles, the city of Rouen and Monet’s house and gardens in Giverny) including transportation and guided visits; pre-departure and overseas orientation program with a guided tour of Paris; International Student Identity Card; transfers from and to Paris airport for group flight participants. For a supplement of $420, students can also choose to go on an optional three day-trip to Normandy and Brittany with two overnights in the fabulous town of Saint-Malo, including transportation, accommodations and guided visits This program is limited to 30 participants and is open to anyone who will be at least eighteen years of age by the departure date of June 9, 2010 and who registers for at least one course. It is highly recommended that students take both classes. Informational meetings for all those interested will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2009 and on Thursday, February 25, 2010 from 6:30-8 pm in LIBR-206 (second floor of COC library).
