Paul Sherman
Applied Music, Oboe
Paul Sherman, oboist, received his Bachelor of Music at the
California Institute of the Arts where he studied with Dr.
Allen Vogel. His Masters of Music was earned from the
University of Southern California and studied under David
Weiss. He is currently completing his Doctorate of
Musical Arts from USC and is studying under Joel Timm.
He is also studying Baroque oboe practices with Steve Hammer,
Gonzalo Ruiz, and Marianne Pfau.
Mr. Sherman is a strong believer in being prepared for the
only growth industry in the music business, the period baroque
ensemble. In this medium he regularly performs with Musica
Angelica Baroque and is the principal oboist with the Harmonia
Baroque Players. The age of playing baroque music
only on modern instruments and in a non historically correct
manner has come to an end. Furthermore, he believes that
if we are to live in a society that sees music as kinds of
aural museum pieces, it makes sense to attempt to hear them as
the composers originally intended.
It is Mr. Sherman's goal as a teacher and performer to
present audiences, and students with the skills and ears
necessary to return to the exciting world of music
innovation. As an advocate and performer of contemporary
music he is the oboist with Ensemble Green. This
season, he will be premiering at least three new works for
oboe. He is also planning to perform with the Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Pasadena Pops, LA Baroque and
was a soloist with the Corona Del Mar Baroque Festival
Orchestra.
