The
Program
This is an intense program of instruction originally
designed for teachers and emergency personnel, but which is very
useful for anyone wishing to learn Spanish language and culture
or a more technical and specialized Spanish for professionals
in the teaching, health, business or law enforcement field. All
levels of fluency will benefit from instruction.
Summer Intensive Institute: A Language and Culture Program
Offered every summer in August, the program is designed to
provide a near-total immersion into Spanish language and culture
for everyone from beginners to more experienced Spanish speakers.
Classes and activities have been structured to provide relevant
training for teachers; for nurses and emergency services personnel;
for students who want to enhance their skills; and for community
members wishing to learn more about Spanish language and culture.
Students may earn up to 3.25 units of credit in five days.
The main program includes language instruction and sessions
of cultural workshops, language lessons, lectures on various
topics, conversations, hands-on cooking or dancing, pedagogy
and teaching FL, and much more. Classes are two (2) units and
are offered from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for
five-days. Additionally, students may sign up for conversational
mini-courses during the lunch hour for .25 units of credits.
Cultural
Seminars
Courses on special topics of Latin America
or Peninsular Culture and Civilization are offered in the afternoon
from 4-6:40 p.m. Each course is one (1) unit.
Specialized
Courses
Courses on Spanish for Teachers and Spanish for
Medical Professionals are offered in the afternoon from 4-6:40p.m.
Each course is one (1) unit.
Winter
Intensive Institute: Spanish for Professionals
Offered in January, A fast-paced training of
practical and technical Spanish. The program offers courses tailored
for the professions and occupational setting. Specialized courses
for business, medical, teaching and law enforcement field are
offered in the early evening during the weeklong institute to
meet the busy schedule of working professionals. Spanish survival
mini-courses, conversations and translation techniques sessions
are normally offered in the afternoon.
Students
may earn up to 3.5 units of credits in five days.
