Where is the
New Works Festival?
The New Works Festival is a part of the College of the Canyons,
a community college in Santa Clarita, California, in Northern
Los Angeles County.
What types of piece are accepted for the New Works
Festival?
All forms of work are accepted for consideration: monologues,
scenes, 10 minute plays, one-acts or full length two-act plays.
Are there any restrictions as to content?
Yes. Submissions must be previously unproduced,
unpublished, and solely the original work of the playwright.
Adaptations will not be accepted. Musical pieces must be
accompanied waiver from all creators.
There is no restriction to content. However, consideration is
given to pieces that are reasonably producible.
Elements that make pieces difficult to produce are: very large
casts, animals, and young children on stage, gratuitous or
excessive profanity and/or nudity, expensive or elaborative
production needs.
Does my piece need to be finished?
No. Many of the pieces selected are works in progress. However,
all pieces selected are at least a finished first draft that
illustrate a basic understanding of dramatic form, character,
and dramatic action.
Will my piece definitely get into the festival?
Not all pieces submitted are selected to participate in the
festival. The festival focuses on developing storytellers with
an emphasis on the basic elements of plot, action, characters
and dialogue.
Is there a particular format required for submitting my
work?
Yes, the required format is as follows:
- Scripts should be in
12-point type, standard typeface
- Scripts must include page
numbering
- Submissions must be stapled.
(not bound)
- Script must be available in
digital format in a standard word processing program
