Online Orientation for Math 070 Hybrid, Fall 2009

Note: This information relates to section 70106 only, which meets at the Valencia Campus.
If you would like to add the class, please add yourself to the online waitlist prior to attending the on-campus orientation. If the class enrollment is below 33 students, add codes will be distributed in waitlist order at the on-campus orientation on Tuesday, August 25.

To complete the course orientation requirement:
1. Attend the on-campus orientation on Tuesday, August 25 from 7:35-10:00pm in Aliso Lab 326 at the Valencia campus. During the orientation, I will introduce CourseCompass, a Blackboard based course management system, and the main online features of the course. You will also complete a preliminary assessment of your math skills to determine your knowledge of the prerequisite course material (Math 060 Beginning Algebra).
2. Please read the online orientation information and successfully complete the online orientation quiz (see link below). Upon successful completion of this quiz, you may register at the CourseCompass website to start accessing the course materials and online homework. I recommend doing so only if you are certain that the hybrid format suits your learning style.

BUY THE TEXTBOOK/STUDENT ACCESS KIT
**Warning**
The COC Bookstore sells the textbook and the MyMathLab Student Access Kit, but they may not be bundled together. If you decide to purchase the Student Access Kit at the bookstore, please be sure to ask the staff for it since it may not be available on the shelves. You may also check other online vendors for the textbook.
The textbook is available as an e-book on CourseCompass. To use the e-book rather than purchasing a hardcopy textbook, you must purchase the Student Access Kit at the COC Bookstore or online at http://www.coursecompass.com
However, I warn you about using the e-book. Yes, you may print it, but also factor in the time to print and cost of printer cartridges. You will also need computer access to read the book or complete text exercises. Initially, it seems to save money, but students often find that after a week or so, they would rather use an actual textbook. They ultimately end up paying more money because they have to buy the textbook and Student Access Kit separately.
If you have previously taken Math 070 Hybrid at College of the Canyons, please contact the instructor to determine if you will need to purchase another Student Access Kit.

This quiz is based on information contained in the above orientation documents. Upon successful completion of the quiz, you will see the CourseCompass ID on your screen, and I will also automatically receive a confirmation of your completion of the orientation quiz.
NOTE: Do not e-mail the instructor to obtain the CourseCompass ID.
You must successfully complete the orientation quiz in order to register in CourseCompass and remain enrolled in the class.

REGISTER IN CourseCompass
After you have successfully completed the orientation quiz and received the CourseCompass Course ID, you may register in CourseCompass.
Refer to the "How To Access CourseCompass" document above when you register in CourseCompass.
As soon as you enroll in this course through STAR and register for CourseCompass, you may begin the course. I have posted various online assignments, and you may submit them anytime before the stated deadlines.
